Artist Statement
For my independent project, I choose to paint how I see music. I decided to paint for many reasons, but the main reason was that I felt that I could do a lot more with painting than if I did it digitally. I also thought that I could be more creative, and I would have to rely on what I saw in my head instead of what I saw on the music covers and other visuals online. If I had chosen to do this project digitally and photoshop my project, then it would have taken longer to do, and it would be tough to put everything together because it is digital. I also wanted to try painting again since I don't paint at home and enjoyed it when I did it for my last independent project.
The theme of my project was how I see music. When I first created my project, I wanted the paintings to represent one song each. I realized later on that I would have to listen to one song per painting. So, I later decided to have one main theme for each painting and listen to other songs for inspiration from the paintings. The main idea of this project was to show how I imagine music in my head and show how it makes me feel.
Many things worked and didn't work well when I was painting. Something that worked well while I was painting was how the paint came out on the canvas when I mixed specific shades. The things I painted came out well on the canvas when I finished the painting; One of the things that didn't work when I was painting was paint transferring from one to another. Another thing that didn’t work was the original designs for some of the paintings, but I think they came out better with the new designs.
Some of the design principles in my art are unity, contrast, repetition and emphasis. Three of my paintings have examples of contrast and emphasis. These paintings have bright colours against darker colours or warmer colours against colder colours. All of my paintings have repetition and unity in them. I wanted my paintings to have something that connected them all. So I choose to use lines to connect all my paintings, and for three of them, I decided to use the song titles.
